Celebrating the Significant Birth of Christ the Saviour

Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2: 10- 11 (NKJV)

It is amazing to note that God sent His angels to appear to a motely group of shepherds and announce the birth of His Son, Jesus. God did not send the angels to the “big men” and “big women” in society like the Pharisees, or the scribes who were distinguished for their labour in recording Scripture, or even the king. God chose the shepherds who did menial jobs, and whom people had put on the edge of society. He chose this set of people as the first to receive His good news. Similarly, it does not matter how difficult your year has been, how little you feel you have accomplished, what people have said about you, or what you have even said about yourself. For each of us, God is still unveiling the truth of Jesus as our Saviour.

Our Scripture reading describes Christ as the Saviour. In the age in which Jesus lived, people needed saving and society was in a desperate place. However, our world is not much different today - with political turbulence, poverty and pain, we all need saving. And the only Saviour for humankind was born at Christmas: Jesus Christ!
