For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren. Hebrews 2: 11 (NKJV)

Apostle Paul describes life outside of Christ as being dead in transgressions (Ephesians 2:1). Whereas, for those who are believers in Jesus, we are alive unto God. The way to live this type of life is not through sheer effort, ability or strength. Rather, we need Jesus, and Christmas signifies God coming to dwell within us and empower us.

The Bible tells us that the devil seeks to steal, kill and destroy, and sadly, his efforts are visible in society (John 10:10). However, Jesus offers us abundant life that cannot be stolen, killed or destroyed by the devil; a life made possible only through Christ! The Bible makes reference to this abundant life in the prophecies about Jesus’ birth, hundreds of years beforehand. It tells us that Jesus would be born and would grow, and describes various attributes of the awesome power of God that humans will experience through Jesus (Isaiah 9:6). Firstly, the reference to the “government being upon Jesus’ shoulders”, refers to Jesus’ Kingdom, and those who believe in Jesus are now members of His kingdom.

The same prophetic passage calls Jesus “Wonderful”. Although the way God works is often outside the realm of human knowledge, those who believe in Jesus experience the awe and wonder of being part of God’s family. In describing Jesus as “Counsellor”, Scripture assures us that the life-giving Holy Spirit of Jesus would be within us to regulate and direct us. It tells us that Jesus is the “Mighty God” who is all-sufficient and sustains us in His care, and that He is the “Everlasting Father” that spans beyond our lifetimes and beyond generations. Our assurance of life in Jesus Christ should be intact because Jesus is the “Prince of Peace”. The Son, who is the gift from God that we celebrate at Christmas, makes the Christian life possible in Him.
