“… For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.” Luke 2:30-32 (NKJV)

There was a time when companies offered their staff opportunities to win tickets to certain attractions so they could enjoy the experience. Such gifts are not tangible or edible, but are experiential. Similarly, Christmas is an experience, and in reality, the best part of this experience is the gift of gaining God. Having an experience with God is not a one-off event, but a daily reality, because God is always with us.

Myles Munroe is famously quoted for saying that when one does not understand the purpose of a thing, abuse is inevitable. The experience of God that we have is one that continues all through our lives, but sometimes, we do not appreciate or value the experience. For instance, in seasons when the world is panicking and we are all looking for safety, if we would pay attention to the Lord, we would understand that He is our safety (2 Corinthians 1:10). This is why the Psalmist could say ‘The LORD is my light and my salvation… The LORD is the stronghold of my life’ (Psalm 27:1). He did not go to look for salvation elsewhere, because he knew that he had it in God.

Christmas is about getting to experience God, and having a relationship with Him that lasts throughout our lives, and in eternity. This was made possible when Jesus fulfilled His objective of taking the punishment for our sins on the cross. And now, we experience all the goodness of God through Jesus! This experience includes the enjoyment of God’s comfort, consolation, reassurance, salvation, light and glory!
